Meta Tags: Is it Worth Dying For?

When it comes to achieving top search engine rankings, how large of a role do meta tags actually play? Is it really a big factor to make you on top on the search engines? Do we need to let go of using meta tags in our optimization technique? Too many questions but very hard to answer.

Before, the keywords tag had an impact on a web site’s position within the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS). They are always present in every web pages. They often called it as an on-page optimization technique because they are related directly to the content and structure of the website. But sadly, many search engines now discount the weight given to on-page factors because they give too much scope for abuse by SEO experts. Webmaster used them and oftentimes overused these tags and therefore the search engine placed less importance on them. The abuse of using these tags triggered the search engine company like google to change their algorithm and the way they rank a website. Today, the meta keyword tag is quietly living in its foster home and is fairly irrelevant to getting a page ranked high. But honestly, some engines still do index the words within these meta tags, but it appears that they use them as a minor supplement to the text in the body copy and title tags of your Web pages.

Now, meta tags is really out of the limelight if you want to attain higher page ranking from the search engines. Since the search engines use a wide variety of factors to determine site rankings, you should use everything available to you that the engines might give some weight like good content, one way quality link, directory submission, blog and other techniques. But no matter what the search engines do in their algorithm, still, meta tags will play a part in optimizing your site.
