The Web 2.0 Technology : The Latest Trend in Web Design

As the generation of web design updates to a second generation called Web 2.0, a technology which is commonly used by wikis, social bookmarking sites, social networking sites, blogs, forums, podcasts, RSS feeds, or any other popular sites found in the World Wide Web. Tim O’Reilly, founder of the O’Reilly Media, gave examples of sites that contain Web 2.0 technology.

  • Level-3 applications are the sites which is most Web 2.0 oriented. Examples are craigslist, del.icio.us, Skype, Craigslist, Wikipedia, eBay, and Adsense.

  • Level-2 applications are the ones that operate offline but can gain the advantages online. Example is Flickr, Yahoo’s photo-database blog.

  • Level-1 applications are the ones that operate offline but can gain the advantages online. Examples are Google Docs and iTunes.

  • Level-0 applications are the ones that makes offline as online. Examples are Google Maps, Yahoo! Local, and MapQuest.

Here are the characteristics of some sites with Web 2.0 technology:

  • Rich Internet Application techniques, sometimes it’s Ajax based.

  • Valid XHTML and HTML markup

  • CSS layouts

  • weblog publishing tools

  • softwares that generates sites like wikis, forums, and blog
